Interview: Dewi-Marie from Hello Embrace

1. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

My name is Dewi-marie and I work as a freelance designer. I like all things vintage. I love exploring new places, walking and taking pictures and thrift shopping. I drink a lot of green tea and I can never NOT buy anything when I go to an art/craft or fabric store. I have a lot of supplies stored away waiting to be used.

2. How did you come up with your name, Hello Embrace?

I thought about the difference between hugs and embraces. Embraces are just like hugs but you can embrace things that aren’t tangible. And a common theme with my work is always somewhat related to hope and love and love in itself is a general term. So the name is, in a way saying Hello to everything I love.

3. What got you into crafting?

It was something that came naturally. I used to craft a lot when I was younger and always making gifts for friends and then I stopped. But a few years ago, I re-discovered the joy of it and how easily accomplished I felt when a project was completed. I’ve always been supportive and interested in the whole DIY scene. I like the process of being hands on and how organic it is. It’s also very therapeutic.

4. What do you make and why do you make them?

I do hand drawn quote posters. I have always been drawn to typography and always found it easier to draw words as opposed to people or still life. The posters actually started as gifts for friends and I had been posting them on the internet, eventually strangers started asking if they were for sale and so I started selling them on Etsy. The intention of these posters are that they bring some form of wisdom or inspiration into peoples lives while at the same time beautifying their surroundings. I also make hand sewn fabric posters but that’s still in its baby stages.

5. Do you have a favorite item that you created? Is it sold or still available for purchase?

Probably this big piece I did for a Nixon Art Mosh in 2011. It was a 60 x 75cm piece of wood, covered in strips of book cover fabric and I had the words “Our hands like puzzle pieces that fit” cut out of the fabric exposing the wood grain beneath. It sold on the day of the show, which was actually my first show in a very long time and to actually have someone buy my artwork was very gratifying. I actually have another one similar in the works that I have yet to cut out.

6. Are you a full time artist or crafter? If not would you like to be?

I recently left my job in advertising just so I could have more time to dedicate to my ideas. I don’t quite like calling myself an artist. I somehow prefer the term “creative”. I graduated in fine arts but ended up in design, although in between those two time periods, I worked as a photographer for a couple of years and I like doing crafty things.

As a creative, I merge all these things I’ve learnt and love to do over the years to produce a product or artwork. Ideally, I’d like to do this full-time but realistically, there are bills to pay so, I do freelance design jobs to support that.

7. Do you have any favorite blogs or resources that you can share to our readers?

Pinterest is great for quick ideas cos you’ll end up blog hopping alot from there. Then there’s designspiration and typeeverything for my typographic and design fix.

8. Do you have any discount codes or promotions that you can offer our readers?
