Birth Poster

My goddaughter was baptized a few weeks ago and part of our gift for her was a birth poster which shows the baby’s birth statistics and birth information. Her mom saw something similar online and we collaborated to create a version specially for our little angel.

Singapore Insider Guide Project

We’ve been planning to make an insider guide for tourists in Singapore so we can share our favorite things. We’re currently compiling pictures and making illustrations for this free pdf guide. Here are some badges that I’ve been working on for this project.

My badges: (left – right) Shop houses, double-decker bus, personal grocery shopping bag, drinks, food

Apache Marriage Blessing Poem

I was commissioned to work on an Apache Marriage Blessing poem by Germaine for her friends who were getting married. She originally wanted to do the piece in Italics but decided on my version of Modern Calligraphy instead. The text is written using Aurora Black ink and gold gouache on parchment paper.

The work took a few days to finish. I usually start the process with a pencil sketch for the outline and drawing of the feather. Once that was approved, I ink the final piece.

Note: I currently offer Copperplate and Modern Calligraphy services. Please contact me via the contact form for any enquiries.

Mustache Man Birthday Party

My godchild Mavi is celebrating his first birthday party next month and we helped create the party decorations for the party. His mom Meliza has been a friend of mine since high school.

The theme is little gentleman and mustache. The colors for the party is blue, green and yellow.

We decided to create a custom cake topper to match the theme. I hand-painted the wooden cake topper and sealed with nontoxic sealant so that it will be safe to put on top of the cake.

We brainstormed the idea for the invitation and the gingham and other illustration were made specifically for this occasion.

Unfortunately we will not be able to fly over for the party so we will be sending our love and birthday wishes to Mavi from Singapore.

Note: Please contact us via sales@katrinaalana.com for custom cake topper orders.

Circus Theme Birthday Invitation

My cousin Venus asked me to design a circus themed birthday invitation for her that she can print at home. She had an inspiration photo from Martha Stewart.

Inspiration invite from Martha Stewart

I wanted to take the font type and use of paper accessories as inspiration for my original design. The vintage graphics are courtesy of The Graphics Fairy.

A Birthday Invitation for Venus

The set is composed of the main invitation which is wrapped in wax paper that is tied with twine. Two paper accessories are used to give the invitation a more vintage look. I designed a round sticker for the envelope so that there is continuity from the outside to the inside.

The Invitation Set

She was happy with the first draft so a printable PDF was sent to Venus. I gave her some instructions on what materials to use for the invitation.

We’re getting a few projects for digital copies of invitations and we are thinking of selling some of our designs. What do you think? Would you be interested in purchasing digital designs that you can print at home or email to invite your family and friends?

Photography Practice: People’s Park Complex

During the long weekend last week, Lex taught me how to use the manual mode on my camera. I have always resisted using this setting since I always thought it is not necessary to master this feature but I did give it a shot and I’m pleased to say that I can see the difference in the quality of my photos.

My favorite Kway Teow at Chinatown

The only editing I did on these shots is cropping and a very light adjustment on brightness. The LCD on the camera was slightly brighter so when I adjusted the shutter and aperture settings, I was off by a tiny bit.

Crispy Roast Pork and Jiucy Char Siew for Lunch

We had lunch at People’s Park Complex and we decided to take photos around the hawker area. I will be posting more photos of our photography session in the upcoming weeks.

Lex will be doing a basic photography workshop in November so stay tuned for details. What do you think of my shots? I’d love to hear your feedback.

Quote from Tolkien

I like this quote because it seems like it is about travelling when in fact it is about perception.

J.R.R Tolkien

Practicing my calligraphy with one of my favorite quotes

This poem is from The Lord of the Rings:
All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.

We’re on Straits Times Today

I was interviewed by Lisabel Ting for her column, Get Crafty, last week and I provided the steps on how to make a cake topper. The photos are courtesy of Lex under Photosaurus-Studio.com. Grab a copy of The Straits Times today, to see detailed instructions on we make our cake toppers.

NOTE: We will hold another workshop this month. Sign-up to our mailing list to get updates on our next schedule.

Strongman Dad – Father’s Day Greeting Card

We all think our father is the best. When I think of attributes that describe my father the word strong always comes to mind. So I decided to draw a strongman for our Father’s Day greeting card.

The design is inspired by mid century illustrations and the text is hand drawn type. I wanted to keep the colors to muted and the design simple.

I love using a Muji notebooks and felt markers when I’m sketching my designs. The notebook paper doesn’t bleed and the markers dont’ have a that weird smell.

We’ve listed this item in our shop and it’s available for purchase at Public Garden this weekend.
