Modern Calligraphy Workshop Reviews

It gives us great fulfillment whenever we receive good reviews for our workshops since we sincerely want to impart what we’ve learned to our participants. We don’t want to conduct workshops for the sake of doing so. Our primary objective is to always add value.

Here are some reviews from our Modern Calligraphy workshop participants in our workshops in January:

1. Jael

Jael from Instagram:
With @katrinaalana 🙂 well organised, packaged and paced class. Highly recommended

2. Kristine

Kristinel from Instagram:
ending Jan2015 wit smudges participated in Modern Calligraphy Workshop by @katrinaalana today and learned a whole lot from it. While it’s good that you do you own researches and watch tutorials online, nothing beats the teacher-student kind of learning. the practice sheets are the best! just what i exactly needed. and oh, that left hand technique revived my almost dying interest in calligraphy… thanks so much Lex and Katrina! hope to see you around. 🙂

If you have attended our workshops and you would like to give us some feedback or suggestions, please email us. We will greatly appreciate hearing your voice.

Modern Calligraphy with Public Garden

We had our first workshop collaboration teaching Modern Calligraphy with Public Garden last month. It was held on August 2 which was a Saturday at TripleOne Sommerset. We’re glad to announce that we are holding another session on September 21 after getting a good response on our initial collaboration.

Live Laugh Love Calligraphy Print

We gave away free calligraphy prints for the first time

We love developing new learning materials for the class ever since we started holding workshops this year. We held more than 17 classes so far and each time we tweak and improve our learning materials. We have upgraded our workshop materials by switching to an oblique calligraphy nib, provided more ink and adding more worksheets at no extra cost to our students.

Calligraphy Tools

We equip our students with tools so they can continue learning and improving after the session ends

After the initial discussion on materials and terms, participants practice on the spot. Lex and I constantly go around the room and check-in on each participant several times during the session in case they have any questions or they need additional instructions.

TripleOne Sommerset

Bright white space at TripleOne Sommerset

It was pretty exciting to hold our little workshop and occupy a huge chunk of the 16th floor. I love how bright the light was in the space. We had a wonderful turnout and everyone was so keen on starting the activity. The time flew by and we extended the workshop by more than 30 minutes.

Quote Calligraphy

For this session, we had a quote writing activity at the end of the class. The activity varies from class to class.

Aside from doing drills and going through our custom alphabet, we hold a calligraphy activity at the end of each session. We vary the activity from class to class but for this session, we asked participants to practice writing quotes so they can immediately practice what they’ve learned.

Calligraphy Drills

Drills, drills and more drills!

We had some delicious refreshments were provided by Cupplets. I apologize for not sharing a photo of the actual snack but it was truly chocolatey and a little decadent.

Photo courtesy of Cupplets: Not the actual food served. We were so focused on eating that we forgot to take a photo.

At the end of the session, we handed out Public Garden Participation Certificates for the class. We’d like to thank the Public Garden team for inviting us to participate in their workshop series.

Spacing Guide Sheet for Modern Calligraphy

One of the challenging things in learning Modern Calligraphy is tackling the issue of connecting and spacing letters as you’re learning how to flex the pen. This takes some time to get used to.

Spacing Guide Sheet Practice

Practicing with the Spacing Guide Sheet

During our workshop, we address this issue by providing different types of guide sheets. We develop our own materials to help speed up learning and to equip participants on how to successfully practice at home. We provide some exemplars and one-on-one instruction but the key to learning calligraphy is always to set aside time to practice. We highly recommend practicing for at least 20 minutes at least thrice a week. You can download this guide sheet via our drop box link but please do not link directly to Dropbox if you want to share this guide sheet in your site. Please link to this blog post. You can download a copy of the Modern Calligraphy Spacing guide sheet here so you can practice at your own convenience. You may also like to check out our blank guide sheets here.

Calligraphy Spacing Guide Sheet

    We recommend:

  • printing using a laser printer
  • using the highest quality copy bond paper available

We love hearing feedback and questions from our participants since it allows us to improve the class, learning materials or format. Feel free to email us or get in touch via our contact form. We’d love to hear how you’re progressing. Please leave a comment below.

Workshop Review by Hey Jayel

I was checking my comments and pingbacks at lunch when I saw a ping from Hey Jayel. She attended our workshop last weekend and I was keen to read what she thought about it. Please note that this is not a sponsored review from Elle. This feedback is her own.

Elle: “It was also great because the class was held in smaller groups so Katrina could provide us feedback and advice as we practice our strokes. During the first part of the workshop we covered the differences between Modern and Traditional Calligraphy and also the different materials needed. I loved the tips that she gave us about nibs, inks and pen holders. I learned more in that half hour she was talking then when I did my research online!”

I was happy to hear that our 2 hour workshop was able to meet its objectives. We made sure that the class size was small so I could check up on each participant’s progress. It means a lot to me that one of our participants felt she learned a lot.
